Why Training is Important

In order for businesses to be successful in today’s competitive environment, they need to be flexible and fast-learning. The ability to do this primarily rests upon the ability of their workforce to have these same characteristics – hence why training is so important.

When companies provide comprehensive training to employees, both the firms and the employees benefit.  For businesses, the most obvious benefit is that more knowledgeable employees tend to perform better – with more efficiency, higher quality and increased enthusiasm.  Training can infuse a business with new ideas and best practices critical to solving problems.  Well-trained employees are happier and easier to retain, and I’ve even seen research suggesting that having well-trained employees can improve recruiting efforts.

For employees, a lack of training is often cited as a key source of job dissatisfaction. Often employees view a good training program  just as important as a good benefits package. Employees tend to be more loyal to companies that value their growth, which yields better performance on the job. Providing training for employees can also make a difference in reducing turnover, as well as improving morale, communications, teamwork and much more.

If the benefits are clear, why isn’t every firm investing in training?  While there can be enormous benefits in developing employees, training doesn’t come cheaply. One of the first items to get slashed under budgetary constraints is employee training. This is unfortunate, as trained and energized employees are just what companies need to stimulate growth and maximize efficiencies in tough economic cycles. Management must believe that training is a process, and not a singular learning event. Too many managers view training as a luxury rather than a competitive and strategic necessity. “What if we train our employees and they leave?” is a question that often arises. But another question should be asked; “What if you don’t train them and they stay?”

For training to be effective it needs to be for the right people, focused on the right type of training and executed at the right time. When designing a training regimen you should begin with an accurate assessment of what you do well and what needs improvement. What are the elements that are holding individuals back? What skills do your people lack to do the job? How can you maximize your use of software solutions?

To get the most benefit from your training program, it is essential to provide an opportunity to apply newly learned knowledge and skills after coursework is completed. Each employee should also regularly speak with management not only to confirm that completed training was valuable, but also to plan for any future training needs.
